Workshop
“Scene-linear Workflow / ACES”
MARK Vol.2

Logoscope Inc. collaborated with the CG/VFX studio MARK Inc. to host the workshop “Scene-Linear Workflow and Working Color Spaces.”

The workshop followed a dialogue-based format in which the instructor (Kamemura from Logoscope) guided participants while observing their desktop screens in real time. Each participant’s screen was recorded and archived, allowing them to conduct post-session reviews through video reflection.

In the first half, participants engaged with the fundamentals of constructing CG scenes using a scene-linear workflow, referencing the physical properties of a color chart. They began by sampling data from the color chart and creating graphs in Google Sheets. With these shared graphs, participants verified the linearity of their materials and collaboratively adjusted tonal values based on numerical data rather than visual intuition.
This numerical approach helps prevent inconsistencies between artists, leading to a more unified workflow and improved efficiency in production.

In the second half, the session examined how different software working spaces (working color spaces) impact VFX production. With numerous color spaces available—such as sRGB and ACES—the workshop explored which working space is most appropriate when applying material qualities to CG assets while maintaining fidelity to real-world color and tonal behavior and minimizing data loss.Participants verified in real time how changes in working color space affect both subjective color manipulation and the physical, measurable color values displayed on screen.
